Kinds of Research

There are many different types and methods of research.  The main 4 include primary, secondary, quantitative and qualitative research.
Primary research
This consists of physical ly collecting the information yourself using methods suxh as interviewing,  surveys,  and taking pictures or videos(these are also part of another type of research which I will talk about later)
Secondary reasearch
This is when the information is collected via a ready made source. All online information can be considered as secondary because the information is not self composed. (Pictures, videos, comments, interviews are examples of information you can find online)

Quantitative research
This is mainly the information having to do with facts and figures. In primary research surveys are a common way of collecting this type of research data.  Information such as age, gender and ethnicity are commonly collected as this type of research data. In secondary research the results are more likely to be for example, the number of hits/views on a website or video, how much money was made on the subject. You are more likely to gather this data via secondary resources

Qualitative research
This type deals with the more wordy areas of research such as specific thoughts and feelings. It commonly includes comments, interviews and certain survey type questions. It is you collect this data through physical means(primary research) in order to raise the credibility of the data gathered

Why Do We Research

  • Why Research?
  • It provides a sense of security in the research which involves checking your facts

  • So we can improve and work on a product(s)--Research helps to show when there are unseen faults in products we make and also helps find the solution to these problems

  • To identify a specific audience-- Without knowing who we make a product for there is no guarantee that audience will be satisfied with the product or that it will attract the wrong audience

  • To gain a competitive advantage over opponents, such as pre-preleased information or personal details on the audience
  • To generally gain more knowledge
  • Solve problems a whole as well

Evaluation of Secondary Resources

IMDB

Ø  This is “the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content”, though this is according to the site itself

Ø  Simply because it is so popular that means a large audience rely on it make the information fairly reliable.

Ø  The validity of this site to me is very high because there is a large amount of both quantitative in terms of BOX office figures and such

Ø  Qualitative in terms of comments from the audience on movies and interviews with actors, directors and such people

The Guardian

Ø  This is the site for one of Britain’s national newspaper which makes it highly reliable due to several things as follows.

Ø  A large audience means a lot of people place their trust in it so misinformation could be deadly to the company.

Ø  It’s also regularly updated so the information is always current.

Ø  It is not as valid as the IMDB because it is a newspaper website therefore is based around general news not just media related information.

Evaluation of Survey carried out in college

Evaluation Of Survey

·        I constructed a quantitative questionnaire, made around 20copies total and handed half to my class and the other half to random students I found around the college

·        The results of this survey are to me unsatisfactory.

·        This is simply because these results are neither valid nor reliable.

·        This is due to:

Ø The small sample number

Ø Sample members are young adults who were at the time playing around so may have not answered seriously. Hence affecting the relevance of the information.

Ø Some of the questions themselves were invalid.

If I did this again I might

·        Reword the questionnaire to make it easier to understand and prior to sending it out test it out on close friends and/or family members.

·        Self-presentation- The best one would professional, so people are more likely to take this seriously

·        Check appearance and general ‘air’ of target(s) before approaching as well as the state of their environment—the best one would be a professional environment

·        Change methodology perhaps to qualitative or use both

·        Give survey directly to people who might be interested (e.g. outside cinemas)(Target Audience)

·        Explain purpose of questionnaire (context)

·        Be clear in your questions(clarity)
